The 44 room estate called Naumkeag was built by McKim Meade & White in 1885 as a summer home for Joseph Hodges Choate with it's original gardens designed by Nathan Barrett.
After inheriting the property in 1929 Mabel Choate worked with Fletcher Steele for the next thirty years further transforming the gardens into a series of diverse and artistic garden rooms inspired by trips around the world.
